SORT recycling boonah

a great new recycling opportunity has opened in Boonah.

SORT is a not-for-profit social enterprise that aims to enhance recycling while also creating new jobs for disadvantaged job-seekers.

they work on-the-ground in remote, regional and urban communities around Australia and have recently started in Boonah.

over the next six months, SORT Boonah aims to refurbish 100 Computers for local kids. SORT job seekers canvas donations of computers, learn how to check and disassemble computers before reviewing and refurbishing the computer to strict Microsoft Refurbisher standards.

SORT works with major national welfare agencies to co-ordinate the distribution of the ‘Computers for Boonah and District Kids.’

it’s expected that another 200 or so computers will be dismantled into parts for reuse or further recycling.

everyone is invited to contribute to the success of this venture by donating any surplus computers and related equipment, such as cables, keyboards, monitors, mice etc.

SORT is located in the basement at 9 Church Street, Boonah. for larger donations, they are happy to discuss suitable collection arrangements and can even provide a Certificate of Security for the destruction of any data on computer and printer hard drives at a small fee, if required.

contact them via phone on 5463 1515 email boonah@sort.org.au or find them on facebook.

other local SORT sites include Beaudesert, Ipswich and Inala. find them on facebook.

cow pat collecting

last year, we spent a lovely morning collecting cow manure in a high paddock in mt alford. so we're doing it again this weekend.

we're collecting it to mix with soil to make great potting mix for the plants at the BOSS plant stall.

we're meeting in front of the mt alford school of arts at 8.30am, to then go to the farmer's paddock to fill a couple of uteloads.

if you miss the convoy, the paddock is on anders road. just follow your nose til you see the cars.

please bring your water bottle, wear closed in shoes, gloves and a box to carry the poo to the ute.

this shouldn't take too long, and then we'll go back, have some brunch, and then a quick meeting.

please bring a plate of food to share. if you can make it, that would be great :)

community clothes swap

We'll be celebrating National Recycling Week again this year with our annual community Clothes Swap at the Cultural Centre on Saturday November 7 between 9am and 1pm.

Held simultaneously with the Cultural Foundation's Bookfest, another great recycling event, the Clothes Swap includes women’s, men’s and children’s clothing, shoes and accessories.

If you bring along some clothes, shoes or accessories to participate, then it's free to swap, or otherwise, only a gold coin donation to buy.

Upcycled bags will be available to purchase, and there'll be displays and demonstrations of some great upcycled textile ideas.

Clothes Swaps promote the perks of reuse and recycling and are great for the environment, but they’re also a fun and interactive way to refresh your wardrobes and cleanse your collections for free, making it a budget-friendly alternative to buying new.

Swapping just one suitcase (20kg) of clothes saves enough energy to run a TV non-stop for 1.7 years.

We invite people to participate and bring along a few items to swap, or just come and talk to us and learn more about the broader theme of minimising waste.

As well as the focus on clothes, it's a great opportunity to bring along things which BOSS collects for recycling initiatives, which include

  • mobile phones and accessories for the mobile muster
  • corks and household batteries for recycling
  • old plastic store cards to be upcycled into guitar picks
  • old running shoes for the nike re-use-a-shoe campaign, and
  • bras and swimmers for project uplift
  • household batteries
  • fabric for bags and other crafts, including tablecloths, curtains and sheets,

We’ll also have information there on recent innovations in recycling, including toothbrushes and toothpaste tubes, and other cleaning and beauty product packaging, soft plastics and ewaste.
